Hypnosis and Meditation for Children and Teens

Hypnosis and Meditation for Children and Teens at New Beginnings Hypnotherapy

Despite our best efforts to create a balanced lifestyle, stress creeps into our daily lives. So many of us are overstimulated and over-scheduled. Our children are no exception. Adults may not realize how stressed out our children are. The world has become more complicated and it’s no longer just school and peer pressures that impact kids.

Free play time has diminished as a plethora of extracurricular activities jump in to fill every spare moment. Children are exposed to live-coverage of natural disasters, wars and other negative media that may induce worry and stress in children. So it’s not surprising that anxiety-related disorders in children and teens are on the rise

A natural way to introduce children to peaceful mind is through guided imagery and hypnosis. Guided imagery is a meditative process that uses visualization and imagination to bring awareness to the mind-body connection. Children can easily access this healing process because they’re naturally imaginative. By relaxing into a vivid story they gain tools to deal with stress, pain or difficult feelings. It’s a wonderful way to connect with your child as they learn to listen to their inner wisdom and access their own power of healing.

Why does Hypnosis and Meditation work so well with Children?

Children have fewer imprints and less years of reinforcement in their minds. Their subconscious is highly receptive because, as children, they are literally creating the structure of their inner library and its beliefs, impressions and life experiences. These will affect them for the rest of their lives. For this reason children have a natural drive and hunger for new experiences and ideas. They love to discover things and are very open to learning, receiving and even responding to new ideas.

Children aged 6 or older respond best to hypnosis. Most Children only need 1-3 sessions with improvement beginning from the very first session.

Parental Support Very Important

As in any intervention with children, it is important for parents to be present and informed. During sessions the parent is either relaxing nearby in the background or waiting outside the hypnosis office. Parents are supportive and encouraging, but really don't play any part in the actual sessions.

Session Information

Just as with adults, the child identifies the problem and decides what kind of outcome they want. It is also a time of building rapport and trust between child and hypnotist. During this session the child is evaluated to determine that they are willing to work with the hypnotist and that they want to change.

We use the power of your child’s Imagination. Most children reach powerful levels of hypnosis far faster than adults. We may use one or any of the following to help transform a child while in hypnosis: Stories, visualizations, imaginative games, role playing, puppetsand other tool that may assist in your child's therapy.

A Little Homework Can Make a Difference

Children are sometimes given homework. This could involve keeping a diary, listening to a recording at bed time, drawing pictures or some other simple exercises. Hypnosis is about empowering the child to help him or her self, and it is important that the little one builds confidence and the belief that they did most of the work in solving the problem themselves.

No Side Effects or Risks

Hypnosis, done right, poses neither risk whatsoever nor any adverse effects. Hypnosis is about learning things you didn’t know you knew and controlling things you didn’t think you could. It’s about using daydreams and imagination, thinking deeply and learning how to get your own mind to work for you instead of against you.

Please Note: Hypnosis is a very powerful method for change and has helped thousands of American children to make all sorts of changes in their lives. But….Hypnosis is not mind control. For instance, not even the most excellent hypnotist can MAKE a child change behaviors if they really don't want to or if the parents continue to make opposing non-supportive or non-encouraging suggestions in their day to day life. (If you find you are getting in the way of your child's progress feel free to ask about sessions for yourself. No one is born a perfect parent and sometimes we all need a little extra help.)

We, also, can not accurately predict how many sessions your child will need. Most little ones, but not everyone, begin to experience the benefits from the very first session and most children are happily finished in 2-3 sessions.

For kids we normally limit the number of hypnosis sessions for each issue to 1-8 sessions in most cases. If it takes more than 8 sessions hypnosis may not be right for your child. Ultimately, you and your child are responsible for the changes that occur as a result of the hypnosis sessions. Rest assured, however, that we will not attempt hypnosis on a child if we do not believe he/she is ready and willing.
